How to choose an EV charger installer in the UK: the accreditations that matter, red flags to avoid, and what a proper fixed quote should include.

Choosing an EV charger installer comes down to three checks: are they registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, are they OZEV-authorised (essential if you want the grant), and do they insist on assessing your property — in person or through photos — before giving you a fixed price. An installer who passes all three, names the certificates you’ll receive and puts everything in writing is far less likely to let you down. Here’s what each accreditation actually means, the red flags worth walking away from, and why the cheapest quote is often the most expensive.
The accreditations that actually matter
Installing a home chargepoint is notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. An installer registered with a government-authorised competent person scheme — NICEIC and NAPIT are the big two, and they carry equal standing — can self-certify the job, issuing you a BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate, with a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate following via the scheme. Both run free online registers, so you can confirm a firm is listed and active in about a minute. Do it before you ask for a quote, not after.
If you’re eligible for the EV chargepoint grant — up to £500 per socket, covering 75% of the supply and installation cost, aimed mainly at renters and flat owners, funded until at least 31 March 2027 (last checked July 2026; see GOV.UK) — the installer must also be OZEV-authorised. Only authorised installers can do grant-funded work: they confirm your eligibility, fit an approved smart chargepoint model and claim the grant as part of the job, so it comes off your bill.
A third mark worth looking for is the Electric Vehicle Consumer Code (EVCC), a voluntary code whose members must carry out a site survey — which can be done remotely — before you sign a contract, cap deposits at 15%, offer a minimum 3-year workmanship warranty and provide access to dispute resolution.

Red flags that should end the conversation
A fixed price with no assessment. Quoting from photos of your fuse board, meter and parking spot is perfectly legitimate — good installers do it every day. A firm price with no survey and no photos is not.
Pressure tactics. “This price is only valid today” has no place in a job like this. A fair quote survives a week of thinking.
No mention of certificates. If the paperwork isn’t offered before you ask, assume it won’t appear afterwards either.
A price that never quite firms up. An estimate is fine at first contact; the contract price should be fixed, with any exclusions listed.
Large deposits or cash only. The EVCC caps member deposits at 15% and requires protection for deposits not paid by credit card. Treat anything far beyond that with suspicion.
What a proper quote includes
A written quote worth signing names the charger model (grant-funded installs must use an OZEV-approved smart unit), the cable route and length, the earthing arrangement, any consumer unit work, who notifies your electricity network operator (DNO), the certificates you’ll receive, and the warranty — split between the unit itself and the workmanship.
The installer you choose will check your supply and consumer unit as part of the quote. Occasionally that check turns up something genuine — a looped supply shared with a neighbour, common in terraces and older estates, may need the DNO’s involvement before installation, which can honestly change the price or timeline. That’s different from vague “extras” invented on the day. For most homes, DNO notification is a routine step the installer handles through the Energy Networks Association’s online service; properties with supply issues or unusually high demand may need the network operator’s approval, or work on the supply, before the charger goes in — and a competent installer will know which applies.
Why the cheapest quote usually isn’t
Industry cost guides put a straightforward 7kW home charger at roughly £800–£1,200 fully installed, often more in London and the South East (last checked July 2026). Long cable runs or extra earthing work push that up, and a consumer unit upgrade alone can add several hundred pounds. A quote hundreds below the pack is usually missing something: groundworks excluded, no allowance for consumer unit work, no certification, or a unit swapped for a cheaper model. Paying a second electrician to correct a poor installation costs more than doing it properly once.
Questions to ask before you sign
Ask: are you NICEIC or NAPIT registered, and under what name? Are you OZEV-authorised? Is the price fixed, and what could change it? What certificates will I receive? What’s the workmanship warranty? A straightforward 7kW installation typically completes in a single 2–4 hour visit, so anyone quoting days of labour for a standard job should explain why.
