DNO Notification for EV Chargers: What It Is and Who Handles It
DNO notification for an EV charger, explained calmly: who your network operator is, why your installer notifies them, looped supplies, fuse upgrades and delays.

Every new home EV charger in Great Britain has to be notified to the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) — the company that owns the cables and main fuse feeding your house. Here’s the bit no one explains: your installer does this for you, through a single online form, and for most 7kW home installations it happens after the charger is fitted, with no delay and no paperwork for you. You never fill in a DNO form yourself.
What a DNO is — and why it isn’t your energy supplier
Your energy supplier is the company you pay your bill to. Your DNO is different: it runs the physical network that carries electricity to your door, and you don’t choose it — it’s fixed by where you live. Great Britain is split into 14 regional licence areas, each run by a licensed network operator, and those areas belong to a small number of large network companies.
The DNO cares about your charger for a simple reason: a 7kW chargepoint draws a heavy, sustained load for hours at a time, and the network has to carry it — on your street, not just inside your house.
Three ways to find out who yours is:
- Enter your postcode into the Energy Networks Association’s “Who’s my network operator?” tool
- Call 105 — the free power-cut number, which routes to your local operator in England, Scotland and Wales (Northern Ireland: 03457 643643)
- Check the first two digits of the bottom line of the supply number (MPAN) on your electricity bill — they identify your distributor
Who actually notifies the DNO
Your installer — always. GOV.UK’s guidance is explicit that the chargepoint installer visits the property and works out whether the DNO needs to be informed before or after installation. Since May 2024, installers have submitted these through ENA Connect Direct, a single online platform that replaced the old per-DNO forms and has handled over 400,000 connection applications for chargepoints, heat pumps, solar and batteries (last checked July 2026).
That makes the DNO step a useful honesty test when comparing quotes. A competent firm will mention the notification unprompted; if a quote never touches on it, ask. The installers listed on Evova work with this process constantly, and the installer you choose will check your supply and consumer unit as part of the quote.
Notify after, or apply first? The 28-day rule
There are two routes, and your installer picks between them using a checklist on the ENA connection form. If the job passes every check — one new piece of equipment, the main fuse (cut-out) rating known, no safety concerns at the DNO’s kit, the supply not looped, a metered supply, and maximum demand under the fuse rating and under 60A per phase — the charger can be fitted the same day and the DNO notified within 28 days. That covers most straightforward 7kW installs, which is why most owners never hear the word “DNO” at all.
Fail any check and the order flips: the installer must apply and wait for the DNO’s confirmation before connecting anything.

One quietly useful detail: many smart chargers can limit their own draw when the rest of the house is busy. That load-limiting feature can keep maximum demand under the threshold and turn a would-be application into a same-day fit — worth remembering when comparing chargers.
Looped supplies, small fuses and other “not yet” moments
Two property quirks trip the checklist most often.
A looped supply is where two or more homes share one service cable and cut-out — common in 1970s and 1980s estates, terraced streets and rural areas. A loop fails the criteria outright, so the installer applies to the DNO, which will usually need to separate (“unloop”) the supplies before the charger goes live. UK Power Networks told a parliamentary committee in 2023 that unlooping and fuse upgrades are generally free up front for individual households — though policies vary by DNO, so treat that as the norm rather than a promise.
The main fuse is the other one. Older homes may still have a 30 or 60 amp fuse, and DNOs offer upgrades — National Grid Electricity Distribution, for instance, upgrades to 80 amps and lists EV charging as a common reason. Two cautions: only the DNO may open the cut-out (your installer photographs it for the application if the rating isn’t visible), and the meter tails may need upgrading by an electrician first.
If the local network itself needs reinforcing, that cost has in most cases fallen on the network, not the household, since 1 April 2023.
Can the DNO say no?
Rarely “no”; occasionally “not yet, not like this”. If the network can’t take the extra demand as proposed, the usual outcomes are a load-managed charger, a fuse change or unlooping. Only jobs needing a formal connection quote face a real wait: GOV.UK puts quote times at 5 to 65 working days depending on size, with 90 days to accept and delivery from a few weeks to many months — sometimes longer — for the largest connections. For a standard home installation, none of that applies — the visit typically takes 2-4 hours and the notification follows invisibly afterwards.
