Solar + EV Charging
How to charge your car from your own solar: solar-aware chargers, battery integration, and how to find an installer.
Drive on sunshine
If you have solar panels, or you’re thinking about them, pairing them with the right EV charger means you can power your car from your own roof. Instead of exporting surplus solar to the grid for a few pence, you divert it into your car and bank near-free miles. This page explains how it works so you can decide what’s right for your home before comparing installers.
How solar-aware charging works
A solar-diverting charger like the myenergi Zappi constantly watches the energy flowing in and out of your home. When your panels are generating more than the house is using, it sends that surplus to your car. You can usually choose between:
- Eco+ / solar-only: charge purely from surplus solar
- Eco: top up with a little grid power to keep charging steady
- Fast: a full-speed charge whenever you need it
It works alongside a home battery too, so you can decide whether surplus power tops up the battery, the car, or both.
What it typically costs
A solar-aware charger and its installation generally start from around £1,100 fitted, depending on the unit and the complexity of the install. Tying it in with existing solar and battery systems can add to that. Prices here are indicative only; your actual quote comes from the installer.
Compare chargers
Not every smart charger diverts solar. Compare chargers to see which units are solar-compatible, then shortlist the one to ask installers about.
Grants
Solar generation and EV charging may attract specific government incentives from time to time; any EV charging grants are government-run and claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer, not by Evova. Check what’s currently open on our grants page.
Find an installer
Solar, battery and EV charging perform best when they’re planned together. When you’re ready, compare solar EV charging installers in the directory and choose who to ask for a quote. Want the background first? Read our guide on solar panels and EV charging, or see home charger installation.
Grants & funding
Government EV charging grants are run by the DfT/OZEV and claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer, not by Evova. See which schemes are open and what they cover before you get a quote.
