Workplace & Office EV Charging

What to know about charging for staff and visitors: the WCS grant, scaling sockets, billing, then finding an installer.

EV charging at work, explained

Offering EV charging at work is fast becoming an expectation, for recruitment, for staff satisfaction, and for fleets going electric. This page explains what’s involved, from grants to scaling, so you know what to weigh up before comparing installers. Workplace projects range from a couple of bays in a small car park to larger multi-charger sites.

Grant support: the Workplace Charging Scheme

Most businesses, charities and public sector bodies can apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), which covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing charge points, up to £500 per socket and up to 40 sockets. The grant is government-run and claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer, who handles the technical requirements and applies it for you. Evova doesn’t administer or claim grants. Check what’s currently open on our grants page.

Built to scale

Good workplace planning starts from where you are now and where you’re heading. That usually means installing today’s charge points with the cabling, capacity and smart load management to add more later, without ripping up the car park twice. Typical considerations include:

  • Single or multiple sockets, AC or DC
  • Dynamic load balancing to protect your supply
  • Access control, RFID and usage-based billing
  • Solar and battery integration where it makes sense

What it typically costs

Costs vary widely with the number of sockets, the run from your supply and any back-office and billing setup. Smaller workplace installs often start from around £1,200 per charge point before any grant is applied, but the only accurate figure is a quote for your site. The WCS can reduce the net cost substantially where you’re eligible.

Compare chargers

Workplace sites usually use commercial-grade smart chargers with load balancing and billing support. Compare chargers to understand the features that matter, then discuss the right units with an installer.

Find an installer

When you’re ready, compare workplace charging installers in the directory and choose who to ask for a quote. Planning a larger or public-facing site? See commercial & destination charging, or read the office & workplace guides.

Grants & funding

Government EV charging grants are run by the DfT/OZEV and claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer, not by Evova. See which schemes are open and what they cover before you get a quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Workplace Charging Scheme?
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a government grant that gives eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations a voucher covering 75% of the cost of buying and installing EV charge points, capped at £500 per socket for up to 40 sockets. It's claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer, who applies it on your behalf. See our grants page for current details.
How many charge points does our office need?
It depends on how many EV drivers you have today and your plans for the next few years. A common approach is to install a few charge points now, with the cabling and capacity to expand later. An installer can assess your supply and usage and recommend a sensible, future-proof number when they quote.
Can staff be billed for the electricity they use?
Yes. Smart commercial chargers support access control and usage-based billing, so you can offer free charging as a perk, charge employees a set rate, or recover costs from visitors. An installer can set up a back-office system that fits your policy.
Will workplace charging overload our electricity supply?
Not with smart load management. Dynamic load balancing shares available capacity across the charge points and the rest of the building, so you can add charging without an expensive supply upgrade in most cases. An installer confirms what your supply can take.
