Home EV Charger Installation

Everything to know about getting a smart 7kW home charger fitted: costs, charger choices and how to find a local installer.

Smart home EV charging, explained

Charging your electric car at home is the cheapest and most convenient way to keep it topped up. With a dedicated 7kW smart charger you can add a full overnight charge ready for the morning, often for just a few pounds on the right tariff.

This page is a plain-English overview of what’s involved, so you know what to look for before you compare installers. Any EV charger should be fitted by a qualified electrician to BS 7671 wiring regulations and the latest EV-specific requirements. On Evova, the Evova Verified badge means we’ve checked that installer’s credentials, insurance and accreditations; other accreditations are shown as stated by the installer and aren’t independently checked.

What a home installation usually includes

A typical fixed-price home installation covers:

  • A pre-installation check of your electricity supply and chosen charger location
  • Supply and fitting of your smart charger (or fitting one you’ve bought, where the installer offers this)
  • A standard cable run from your consumer unit to the charge point
  • All necessary protective devices and testing
  • Certification and a walkthrough of how to use your new charger

Ask any installer exactly what their quote includes, and what counts as a non-standard extra, so you can compare like for like.

What it typically costs

A standard 7kW smart home charger generally starts from around £849 fitted, with the final figure depending on the charger you choose and the length and complexity of the cable run. Longer runs, a consumer unit upgrade or trenching can add to that. Prices here are indicative only; your actual quote comes from the installer.

Choosing the right charger

Evova is brand-independent. The most popular home units include Ohme, Zappi (myenergi), Hypervolt, Wallbox and Easee. If you want the lowest running costs, look for a smart charger that pairs well with a cheap overnight EV tariff. Compare chargers side by side, then shortlist the one to ask installers about.

Grants

Home charging is supported by government grants in specific circumstances (for example for some flat owners and renters), administered by the DfT/OZEV and claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer, not by Evova. Check what’s currently open on our grants page.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a home EV charger installation take?
Most standard home installations take between two and four hours and are completed in a single visit. More complex jobs (such as a long cable run, a consumer unit upgrade, or trenching across a driveway) can take longer, and a good installer will tell you in advance if that applies to you.
Will I need any electrical upgrades?
Usually not. Most homes can take a 7kW charger on their existing single-phase supply. Occasionally an older fuse board needs a small upgrade, or the installer fits load balancing to protect your main fuse. An installer checks this when quoting, so there are no surprises on the day.
Which home charger should I choose?
It depends on your car, your driveway and your electricity tariff. Tethered chargers are most convenient; untethered are tidier and future-proof. For the cheapest overnight charging, many drivers pair an Ohme or Zappi with a smart tariff. Compare units on our chargers page, then ask installers what they recommend for your situation.
Can an installer fit a charger I've bought myself?
Often yes. Many installers in the directory will fit a compliant smart charger you've already purchased. They'll just confirm it meets current regulations and suits your supply. Check this with the installer when you request a quote.
