The honest guide to EV charger installation cost UK-wide in 2026: real ranges, what a standard install covers, the extras that add hundreds, and the £500 grant.

A home EV charger installation in the UK typically costs £800–£1,200 all-in in 2026 — charger, fitting, cabling, testing and certification included. Checkatrade’s 2026 cost guide puts the national average at around £834, with most jobs landing between £645 and £1,092 (last checked July 2026). Anyone promising a single fixed price before seeing your property is guessing. The real number depends on how far the charger sits from your consumer unit, the condition of that unit, how your home is earthed, and whether the charger itself is bundled into the quote. Here’s what drives the price — and how the up to £500 grant changes the maths if you rent or own a flat.
What a “standard installation” includes
Most installers and charger brands price around a “standard” job: the charger fixed to a suitable wall, a cable run back to your consumer unit (typically 10–15 metres included), all connections and protective devices, then testing, commissioning and the certification paperwork. Pod Point, for example, sells its Solo 3S from £999 with standard installation included and says around 90% of its customers qualify for a standard install; anything beyond that is surveyed and quoted separately (last checked July 2026 — bundled prices change, so verify before you commit).
A standard 7kW installation completes in a single visit of 2–4 hours. One thing you can’t economise on: since 30 June 2022, any home chargepoint sold in Great Britain must legally be a smart charger, so there’s no cheaper “dumb” option to hunt for. Two extras confuse people most. First, earthing: the wiring regulations (BS 7671, Section 722) don’t allow an outdoor chargepoint to simply rely on the common PME earthing arrangement, so your quote may include an earth rod — or nothing extra at all, because most modern chargers build in open-PEN protection that solves the same problem. Second, notification: your installer must tell the DNO about the charger. Where the property’s total demand stays under 60A they can install first and notify afterwards; a 7.4kW charger draws 32A, so busier homes need a prior application — which usually adds lead time rather than cost.
Whatever a flyer or website price promises, the installer you choose will check your supply and consumer unit as part of the quote — that survey sets the real price, not the advert.
How the £500 grant changes the maths
The EV chargepoint grant covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing a socket, up to £500 (raised from £350 on 1 April 2026), and is funded until at least 31 March 2027. It’s targeted: mainly renters and flat owners with private off-street parking. Homeowners living in houses generally no longer qualify. The OZEV-authorised installer claims the grant and discounts your invoice — you never handle the money. On an £800 standard job, 75% would be £600, so the cap applies and you’d pay around £300.
No off-street parking? There’s a separate route, also worth up to £500 per socket, where a cross-pavement solution — a cable gully across the pavement — is installed alongside the charger, with your council’s consent. What residents pay for the channel varies dramatically: some councils install them free or at a subsidised rate, others charge over £1,000, and exactly what the grant can be applied to is worth checking on GOV.UK before you budget. Why two quotes for the same charger can be hundreds apart
Because installers price the whole job, not the box on the wall. Cable route and length, board condition, earthing method, access, making good, regional labour rates, and whether the unit is included all move the number. A cheaper headline quote that excludes the charger, or assumes a short cable run your property can’t achieve, isn’t actually cheaper.
