Who the Pod Point Solo 3S suits

The Solo 3S makes most sense if you’re an EDF customer, or open to becoming one. Pod Point — rebranded to simply “Pod” in May 2025, and now EDF-owned — sells the charger from £499 upfront through EDF’s Plug & Power bundle paired with a two-year fixed EV tariff, and offers its own exclusive Pod Power by EDF tariff (7 hours off-peak, 11pm–6am, smart meter required). If your electricity is already with EDF, the hardware-plus-tariff package is hard to argue with.

It’s also now a credible option for solar households. The 3S’s headline addition over the Solo 3 (it launched as its successor in May 2024) is genuine excess-solar charging: Solar mode charges from surplus PV alone, while Solar and grid mode tops up from the mains when surplus dips below the 1.4kW minimum a charger needs to run. That closes much of the gap on the Zappi, though the Zappi remains the more configurable solar charger.

Who should look elsewhere: anyone on, or planning, Intelligent Octopus Go. There’s no charger-side integration — smart charging runs through Pod’s own platform, and Pod’s FAQs note that supplier-controlled smart tariffs forfeit Pod Rewards. Tariff-first buyers are better served by an Ohme — our Ohme vs Pod Point comparison explains why.

Key features

  • 7kW single-phase charging (2.5–7kW operating range), in tethered Type 2 or universal-socket versions.
  • Two solar modes — surplus-only or solar-with-grid-assist — toggled in the app.
  • Pod app for scheduling, solar settings, charge stats and Pod Rewards — cashback of up to £100 a year for smart charging; boost, solar and smart-tariff charging don’t earn rewards.
  • Built-in open-PEN protection (no earth rod needed), 6mA DC leakage detection for use with a Type A RCD, and whole-home load management.
  • Rugged build: polycarbonate enclosure, IP54, IK10 impact rating, rated −25°C to 50°C, under 2.5W standby draw.
  • Wi-Fi connectivity with HTTPS-encrypted communication and over-the-air updates.

What to check before you buy

  • Tethered or untethered? Untethered is £999 installed; tethered adds £50. The socket version takes any Type 2 cable and includes the required locking mechanism.
  • Tethered cable length: Pod’s product page says 6.5m, but the official datasheet says 5.0m — likely a running change, so confirm at order time.
  • Wi-Fi coverage: there’s no 4G, Ethernet or Bluetooth fallback, so check the signal where the charger will sit.
  • Warranty small print: the datasheet warranty is 3 years as standard, while Pod markets “up to 5 years” on charger and installation. Confirm what your purchase route includes.
  • Tariff fit: fine for fixed-window off-peak tariffs via scheduling, but there’s no charger-side Intelligent Octopus Go or OVO Charge Anytime integration at the time of writing.
  • Standard installation includes up to 15m of supply cable and a mini consumer unit; Pod says around 90% of customers qualify.

Evova doesn’t sell chargers and has no affiliate links — we just help you find someone trustworthy to fit one. When you’re ready, find a home charger installer near you, and check whether the grant applies — since April 2026 it’s worth up to £500 and covers renters and flat owners and households with on-street parking.

Pros

  • Genuine excess-solar charging, with a grid-assist mode for cloudy days
  • Built-in open-PEN protection — no earth rod needed
  • Flexible purchase routes: £499 EDF bundle or £34/month Pod Drive
  • Rugged IP54/IK10 build with under 2.5W standby draw

Worth knowing

  • Wi-Fi only — no 4G, Ethernet or Bluetooth fallback
  • No charger-side Intelligent Octopus Go or OVO Charge Anytime integration
  • Datasheet warranty is 3 years; the marketed 'up to 5 years' depends on your purchase route

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pod Point Solo 3S eligible for the OZEV grant?
Yes — the Solo 3S (model codes S7-UC-05 and S7-2C-05) is on the government's eligible EV chargepoint model list. Since 1 April 2026 the EV chargepoint grant is worth up to £500 per socket and covers renters and flat owners, residential landlords, and households with only on-street parking; owner-occupiers of houses with driveways remain ineligible. Your OZEV-authorised installer claims the grant as a discount on the installation.
Does the Pod Point Solo 3S work with solar panels?
Yes — solar charging is its headline upgrade over the Solo 3. 'Solar' mode charges from excess PV only, while 'Solar and grid' mode tops up with grid power whenever your surplus drops below the 1.4kW minimum a charger needs to operate. One quirk: Pod's own FAQs confirm solar-charged energy doesn't earn Pod Rewards cashback.
Does the Solo 3S work with Intelligent Octopus Go?
Not at charger level at the time of writing — Octopus doesn't list Pod Point among its charger integrations. Pod's own FAQs treat smart tariffs such as Intelligent Octopus Go as supplier-controlled (typically via a compatible car), and note you lose Pod Rewards eligibility while on one. So you can pair a Solo 3S with Intelligent Octopus Go if your car supports it, but if charger-side integration matters, consider an Ohme or Hypervolt instead.
How much does the Pod Point Solo 3S cost installed?
£999 fully installed for the untethered (universal socket) version, or £1,049 tethered, direct from Pod as of July 2026. Alternatively: £99 upfront plus £34/month over 36 months via the Pod Drive subscription, or from £499 upfront through EDF's Plug & Power bundle paired with a two-year fixed EV tariff. Warranty cover varies by purchase route, so check the terms on the one you choose.
