EV Charging for Schools: The £2,000 Grant Explained (2026)

The EV charging schools grant explained: state-funded schools get up to £2,000 per socket under the enhanced WCS. Eligibility, academy trusts and the 2027 deadline.

State-funded schools, colleges and academy trusts get the most generous version of the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS): a voucher covering 75% of the cost of buying and installing EV chargepoints, capped at £2,000 per socket, across up to 40 sockets — four times the £500-per-socket rate every other workplace gets. It covers England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and closes on 31 March 2027. GOV.UK describes this as the scheme’s “final year” (last checked July 2026), so treat the deadline as real.

One nuance worth getting right: the education rate went down on 1 April 2026, from £2,500 to £2,000 per socket — the same day the standard schemes went up from £350 to £500. Vouchers from applications submitted before 1 April 2026 are still honoured at up to £2,500.

Who counts as state-funded?

Eligibility covers state-funded schools and, more broadly, other state-funded education institutions. Maintained schools, academies and free schools are clearly in. For multi-academy trusts the cap is unusually generous: GOV.UK confirms a trust can apply for up to 40 sockets for each institution, not 40 across the whole trust — though the 40 includes any sockets already claimed in previous WCS applications.

GOV.UK doesn’t list institution types by name, so hedge at the edges: state-funded sixth forms, FE colleges and maintained nurseries should fall within the definition, but confirm with OZEV before applying. Independent schools and private nurseries aren’t eligible for the enhanced rate — they can still use the standard WCS at £500 per socket. Institutions in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man are excluded entirely.

Whoever applies must have the authority to apply on behalf of the organisation — in practice the head, school business manager or trust finance team.

How the application actually works

The order matters, because GOV.UK says a site survey should come before the application. To apply, the institution needs designated off-street parking clearly associated with the premises — the parking may be used by customers, guests, visitors, staff or others, so a staff, visitor or drop-off car park qualifies — and you’re told to get an authorised installer to survey the site first, to confirm the electrical capacity can support the sockets you want. So choosing an installer is step one: find an installer near you — the scheme requires them to be OZEV-authorised — or request a quote.

From there it’s voucher-based, following the same claim steps as the standard scheme: the school applies online, receives a voucher code within 5 working days, and has 180 days to get the installation completed. The installer claims the grant on the school’s behalf and deducts it from the invoice — the school never handles the grant money.

What schools pay after the grant

For most schools the sensible hardware is 7–22kW AC charging, not rapid DC. Excel Energy’s 2026 commercial cost guide puts installed costs at £1,500–£4,000 per AC charger, with groundworks adding £500–£3,000+ per charger and electrical or supply upgrades anywhere from £1,000 to £20,000+ on complex sites — one installer’s figures rather than market consensus, but a fair sense of scale.

What pushes school installs up the range: older buildings, long cable runs from the distribution board to the car park, trenching across hard landscaping, and limited spare supply capacity. The installer will assess your incoming supply and distribution board as part of the survey — that’s exactly what the pre-application survey is for. Note the caps count sockets, not units, so a dual-socket pedestal attracts two sockets’ worth of grant. On a straightforward install, £2,000 per socket can cover most of the cost; on a site needing trenching or a supply upgrade, a smaller share. Siting, timing and out-of-hours use

The 180-day voucher window fits the school calendar well: apply in the spring term, install over the summer holidays. Term-time installs are possible, but holidays avoid contractors and pupils sharing the site. Siting is usually a safeguarding-aware judgement — staff and visitor parking away from pupil circulation routes — and contractor supervision or DBS requirements are the school’s own safeguarding-policy decisions, not grant conditions.

Planning is rarely an obstacle: chargepoints in lawful off-street parking are usually permitted development, covering wall-mounted units and upstands up to 2.7m in non-domestic settings. Listed buildings and conservation areas warrant a check with the local planning authority first.

Two more questions bursars ask. Free staff charging is generally not a taxable benefit, provided it’s available to all staff at that workplace, and charging company cars is exempt too — a summary, not tax advice, so run it past your accountant. And community use out of hours is possible, but opening chargers to the general public triggers the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 (contactless payment on new 8kW+ sockets, displayed pence-per-kWh pricing, a free 24/7 helpline, open data), while staff-and-visitor-only chargers stay exempt.
