EV Charger Installation in Older Homes: What to Expect

Getting an EV charger in an old house rarely means a rewire. Old wiring colours, full fuse boxes, looped supplies, earthing and listed buildings explained.

Yes — you can almost always fit an EV charger in an old house, and in most cases it does not need rewiring first. A home charger runs on its own brand-new dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, so the age of the wiring in the rest of the house rarely matters. Older properties throw up four complications more often: a small or full consumer unit, a looped supply shared with a neighbour, an earthing arrangement that needs extra protection, and — for a minority — listed building or conservation area rules. All are routine, and the installer you choose will check your supply and consumer unit as part of the quote.

Old wiring colours don’t mean a rewire

If your home was wired before 2004, its cables use the old colours — red for live, black for neutral. The harmonised colours (brown live, blue neutral) were introduced in 2004 and became mandatory for new work from April 2006. Crucially, existing red/black wiring does not have to be ripped out: BS 7671 permits old and new colours in one installation, provided the conductors are correctly identified and a warning notice is fixed at the consumer unit. The new EV circuit simply uses modern cable alongside the old.

What can trigger remedial work is the condition of the installation, not its colour scheme. The installer will check the parts the charger depends on — main earthing, bonding and the consumer unit itself — and anything unsafe must be put right before they connect. It is not a legal rule as such, but installers will also normally insist on upgrading a very old board with rewirable fuses first.

Full or tired consumer units

A full fuse box is the most common older-home snag, and usually the cheapest to solve: rather than replacing the whole board, installers can fit a small dedicated sub-board just for the EV circuit. Looped supplies: sharing a cable with next door

Plenty of older semis and terraces have a looped service: one underground cable feeds the first house, and a second cable runs from that house’s meter position to the neighbour. Two homes share one incoming supply — which means adding a 7kW charger needs the network operator (DNO) involved before installation, not after.

Normally the DNO side is invisible to you: under the industry-wide connect-and-notify process, where the property’s maximum demand is 60A or less the installer can fit the charger first and simply notify the DNO within 28 days, while bigger demands need approval before work starts. A looped supply is an exception — the DNO asks for an application before the charger goes in, even below 60A, so the cut-out can be checked and unlooping arranged. Unlooping usually means laying a new cable to the neighbour’s meter position; DNOs generally carry out this work free of charge where it is needed for a home charger (confirm with your own operator), and it commonly takes anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. The install itself is unaffected: once the supply is sorted, a 7kW charger still goes in within a single 2-4 hour visit.

Two reassurances. Many DNOs will upgrade a smaller main fuse free of charge where the existing service cable and cut-out are rated for it — they check before quoting anything. And where the supply is tight, most smart chargers use a CT clamp to throttle around household demand rather than overload the fuse.

Earthing in plain English: PME, TT and earth rods

Most UK homes have PME earthing, where your earth connection arrives through the supply cable itself. That is fine indoors, but BS 7671 forbids using a PME earth for a chargepoint charging a car outdoors unless extra protection is applied, because a broken PEN conductor — the combined neutral-and-earth — could make the car’s bodywork live.

Two fixes exist. The traditional one is an earth rod, giving the EV circuit its own independent TT earth. The modern one is a charger with open-PEN detection built in — most reputable manufacturers now offer it, so many installs need no rod at all. Listed buildings and conservation areas

In England, a wall-mounted home chargepoint is normally permitted development — no planning application — provided the unit stays within the size limit (0.2 cubic metres) and the property is not within the curtilage of a listed building or on a scheduled monument. Since 29 May 2025, the old condition blocking chargers within two metres of a highway has been removed.

Listed buildings therefore need a conversation with the council before anything is drilled: expect a planning application and possibly listed building consent. Conservation areas are gentler — designation alone does not remove permitted development rights, but a council Article 4 direction can, so check before booking.
